Wix says GPT‑4o can build you a full website in minutes

Wix has been in the AI game longer than most people realize. The company launched its Artificial Design Intelligence back in 2016, an early attempt at algorithmically generating a site’s user interface. That slow burn of incremental AI integration—content generation, image processing, customer support—set the stage for what the company is rolling out now. The new AI website builder, powered by OpenAI’s GPT‑4o, lets a user describe their business in a chat interface and receive a complete, functional website with tailored copy, images, and integrated business apps. No manual layout work required.

Yaara Asaf, Wix’s Head of Product, doesn’t mince words about the lowered barrier: you get a polished, working site without understanding layout or design. That promise hinges heavily on the quality of the generated text, which is where OpenAI’s models do the heavy lifting. The tool writes everything from SEO-friendly meta descriptions and product blurbs to full blog posts. Oz Golan, a product manager at Wix, explained that they started with GPT‑3.5 for speed and now layer in their own prompt engineering—effectively distilling decades of knowledge about web copy and user behavior into instructions for the model. That combination, he says, helped expand the tool’s scope from single paragraphs to entire multi-page websites.

Behind the scenes, GPT‑4o’s vision capabilities are parsing images for portfolios and even pulling menu data from restaurant photos, while AI-driven report generators let business owners query their own data in plain English. The translation piece is also handled by OpenAI, making the builder available in nine languages. Wix claims the impact on user workflow is stark: tasks that once took ten hours now take around ten minutes. Head of Data Science Hila Gat frames the core value as providing genuinely professional text quality by marrying Wix’s website-building expertise with the raw power of GPT models.

The push to make this ubiquitous includes a Website Builder GPT that runs on ChatGPT Enterprise, letting anyone spin up an enterprise-grade site conversationally. CEO Avishai Abrahami notes that since its 2024 launch, hundreds of thousands of sites have already been created this way. For a company that built its name on a drag-and-drop editor, betting that the next interface is just a chat box is a genuinely interesting pivot. The question now is whether the template-like consistency of AI-generated sites will be a feature for small business owners who just need to get online, or a limitation as they try to stand out.
