US Navy's First Kamikaze Drone Boat Strike Hits Iran Base

The game has officially changed in the Persian Gulf. The US military has crossed a new threshold by deploying explosive-laden drone boats in combat for the first time, striking an Iranian midget submarine and a maintenance facility at the Bandar Abbas Naval Base. The raid, which occurred on the night of July 12, represents a significant doctrinal shift, bringing a tactic long used by Iranian proxies directly into the Pentagon’s playbook.

US Central Command confirmed the operation, releasing video of three “one-way attack surface drones” making what USNI News described as a “low-speed, uncontested approach” before detonating. One of the drones obliterated a Ghadir-class midget submarine that was suspended out of the water. The operation’s success is a stark display of asymmetric warfare capability, nearly a decade after Iranian and Houthi forces first put suicide sea drones on the map.

A closer look at the hardware puts the strike’s precision into perspective. The weapon in question is the Saronic Corsair, a 24-foot autonomous surface vessel from Austin-based Saronic Technologies. Built to haul up to 1,000 pounds of payload over 1,000 nautical miles and hit speeds over 34 knots, the Corsair is designed for long-range missions without a human at the helm, handling navigation and loitering on its own. For this job, the payload was clearly high explosives.

This isn’t even the Corsair’s first operational highlight in the conflict, which erupted when the US and Israel struck Iran on February 28, 2026. Back on June 8, the same type of drone fished two US Army AH-64 Apache pilots from the sea off Oman after their helicopter was downed by a cheap Iranian Shahed drone. The dual-use nature of the platform—plucking pilots out of the water one month and sinking submarines the next—shows a grim versatility that is likely to reshape how the Navy thinks about small, unmanned craft in contested waters.
